"Oy vey, my son is gay!"

I apologize to anyone who has been following this blog.

I have not written anything for quite a while.

No excuses. But it's time to start writing again.

So let's begin with a little humor. Take a look at this movie trailer. My son sent it to me last night.

Be well.

Saul David

You know what my first thought was?
Why is the Jewish son not played by a Jewish actor? lol
One can only hope that it's not something ridiculous.
My experience watching films with gay Jewish characters -- at least American films -- is that they often have a problem presenting the Jewish part of the character in an appropriate light.
That might be an interesting post:
Films that portray Jewish gay men where there is some depth of understanding and positive attitude toward Judaism and being gay.

Anonymous, would you be able to elaborate on what "an appropriate light" is? I haven't seen many movies with gay Jewish characters, so I am a little uncertain of what you mean.

For what it's worth, I thought that Trembling Before G-d was not a very good movie at all. It might be refreshing to see it from a comedic standpoint.

Okay, here's what I mean. When a Jewish character who is gay is presented on screen in many American films and on American TV, we often see them as coming from disfunctional families who are presented as the biggest stereotypes out there. They are often shown as loud, greedy, fat, ignoramuses. The Jewish gay character is either ignorant of his religion or dismisses it.
Yes, there are films out there that are nicely done, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Ok, I understand what you're getting at. I would think that a portrayal as you describe it might be less than likely, in the orthodox context. To people outside of Judaism, and even to most within it, there's no apparent option of staying religious and being gay (if this is indeed what you meant by characters dismissing their religion).

To be honest, most orthodox communities are, in actuality, nearly impossible to be a part of if you are gay (unless you stay in the closet, marry, and have kids). I grew up in about as modern an orthodox community as they probably come, and even I feel that there is no place for me there. I'm unsure of who knows about me and who does not (because Jews love to talk about it, as previously discussed here and elsewhere), and it makes me quite uncomfortable...so I avoid the community like the plague. But I digress.

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. It might not cut it on the religious level, but culturally it might be pretty close (come on, if you've ever seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you know that Lainie Kazan plays as good a Jewish mother as anyone)

I recently read a wonderful posting at "Jew world order" about a film called "Nick and Norah".
This is a film that I will search out. Please check the very thoughtful commentary on the film which explains some of my feelings in greater detail. BTW, I am not the owner of that blog.
